In 2012, in Knowlton Township, NJ a few miles from our house, Brook Hollow Winery broke ground. The winery has been very successful, it is a place where people can buy wine but it also features a tasting room with weekly entertainment, a rustic style pavilion and a banquet hall for parties and events, even outdoor yoga next to the growing vines. It’s more than just a liquor store or winery; it’s a place where people can connect. The fruit is bright and the flavor is bold.
When Jesus says he is the vine and we as the branches he graphically conveys that we are meant to bear fruit. This powerful image of connection reveals how we are planted and nurtured by God, the vine grower, to bear a bountiful harvest. Visit any successful vineyard, fruit farm, or winery when the farmers are caring for the fruit, and you will see how closely connected each person is to both vine and branches. Each branch connected to the vine reminds us that we are all connected to Christ—our vine, our foundation, the root and ground of our very being!
