Teach your children what we have taught our children, the earth is our mother... This we know. The earth does not belong to humans; humans belong to the earth. All things are connected like the blood which unites one family... Whatever befalls the earth befalls the children of the earth. People did not weave the web of life, they are merely a strand of it. Whatever they do to the web, they do to themselves.

Environmental Mission Statement:

We, the community of faith at Stanley Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, take seriously the biblical wisdom that reminds us that "The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it." (Ps. 24:1 NIV) We are called upon to acknoweledge that we are transient stewards whose responsibilty is not only to enjoy creation but also to care for it and ensure that its bounty is and will be available to all.  To that end we are committed to partner with GreenFaith, and to utilize the resources of its certification program to advance our shared goal of caring for the earth as a religious value.  We will accomplish this through a greater "greener" awareness through our worship and programs including:

  • Spiritual Formation - We grow spiritually through our relation with the earth.

  • Justice - Everyone has the right to live in a clean, safe environment

  • Stewardship - People of faith have a vital role to play in restoring healthy ecosystems around the word.

How It All Started:

Throughout the world, Christian communities are coming to realize that they are called to care for Creation. At Stanley Church we embraced this calling by taking part in the GreenFaith Certification Program, the first-ever interfaith environmental certification program for houses of worship.

Over the course of two years, we undertook a large number of environmental initiatives in the areas of Communication, Spirit, Stewardship, and Environmental Justice. By successfully completing these efforts, we earned recognition as a GreenFaith Sanctuary. Read more about how Stanley Church continues our GreenFaith Committment.
